Most fish feeds are designed to minimize the amount of excess phosphorus in the feeds. In ponds or recirculating systems, excess phosphorus can encourage unwanted algal blooms and diminished water quality. Like most things in aquaponics, the traditional approach doesn’t quite fit.
Aquaponics requires a very delicate balance of a wide range of inputs. Trying to ensure growing plants are getting what they need to grow in optimal ranges is further complicated by adding a whole other organism to the mix: fish. In working with some aquaponics leaders, Optimal Fish Feed developed a line of feed specifically designed for use in aquaponic systems.
Optimal Aquaponic is designed to take what we know best, growing fish, and listening to aquaponic producers to help create a feed that also aids in growing plants. Since the plants derive their nutrition from the fish excretes, Optimal Aquaponic fortifies the common nutrients required by plants; phosphorus, potassium, and iron. This combination of ingredients ensures optimal growth in fish with enough excess nutrients which pass through and enter the water column to feed the plants reducing (and in some cases eliminating) the need for expensive supplemental dosing directly to the water.
Optimal Aquaponic is a 38% protein and 8% lipid floating diet designed for common aquaponic species like tilapia, catfish, and carp. Additionally, Optimal's feeds are all produced with the high pellet integrity standards required by recirculating aquaculture systems.
